What is it used for?
Dexamethasone injection is a corticosteroid used to reduce severe inflammation and allergic reactions. It may also be used for other serious conditions requiring rapid corticosteroid treatment; the exact use depends on the doctor's diagnosis.
How does it work?
It reduces the activity of substances in the body that cause inflammation and allergic or immune reactions.
How to take/use it
This injection must be given by a doctor or nurse, usually in a hospital or clinic. The dose, route and treatment duration depend on the condition being treated. Do not self-inject or use it without medical supervision.
Common side effects
Increased blood sugar, stomach upset, mood changes, difficulty sleeping, increased appetite, fluid retention and pain or redness at the injection site may occur.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about diabetes, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, mental health conditions, osteoporosis or any current infection. Corticosteroids can reduce the body's ability to fight infections and may mask infection symptoms. Seek medical help for severe allergic reactions, unusual weakness, vision changes or signs of infection. If used for more than a short period, it should not be stopped suddenly unless advised by a doctor.
