What is it used for?
Dapagliflozin is used to help control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is also prescribed for some adults with heart failure or chronic kidney disease to help reduce the risk of worsening heart or kidney problems.

How does it work?
It helps the kidneys remove excess glucose from the blood into the urine. It also increases the removal of salt and water, which can support heart and kidney function.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food, and swallow the tablet whole. Drink enough fluids unless a doctor has advised fluid restriction. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Increased urination, thirst, dehydration, dizziness, urinary tract infections, and fungal infections of the genitals may occur. Low blood sugar is more likely when used with insulin or certain other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney problems, low blood pressure, dehydration, recurrent urinary or genital infections, or use of insulin or other diabetes medicines. Seek urgent medical help for nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, unusual tiredness, difficulty breathing, or confusion, as these may indicate diabetic ketoacidosis, even if blood sugar is not very high. Medical advice is needed before surgery, prolonged fasting, or during severe illness with vomiting or diarrhoea. It is generally not used for type 1 diabetes and should be reviewed during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
