What is it used for?
Dapagliflozin is used with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It may also be prescribed to reduce the risk of worsening heart failure and progression of certain types of chronic kidney disease.

How does it work?
It helps the kidneys remove excess glucose and sodium from the body through urine. This lowers blood sugar and can reduce extra fluid and pressure on the heart and kidneys.

How to take/use it
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, with or without food. Drink adequate fluids unless a doctor has advised fluid restriction. Do not stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Increased urination, thirst, dehydration, dizziness, urinary tract infections, and fungal infections around the genitals. Low blood sugar is more likely when used with insulin or certain other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney problems, low blood pressure, dehydration, or recurrent urinary or genital infections. Seek urgent medical help for severe nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, unusual tiredness, breathing difficulty, or confusion, as these may indicate diabetic ketoacidosis. It may need to be stopped temporarily during serious illness, prolonged fasting, or before surgery—follow medical advice. It is not generally used for type 1 diabetes. Discuss use during pregnancy or breastfeeding with a doctor.
