What is it used for?
Norethisterone is used to manage heavy, painful or irregular periods and other menstrual problems. It may also be prescribed for endometriosis or to delay a period.
How does it work?
It is a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. It helps control changes in the womb lining and regulate menstrual bleeding.
How to take/use it
Take it by mouth exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day, with water. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. This medicine is not a contraceptive.
Common side effects
Nausea, headache, breast tenderness, bloating, mood changes, and spotting or irregular bleeding may occur.
Precautions
Do not take it if pregnant unless specifically advised by a doctor. Tell the doctor about unexplained vaginal bleeding, liver disease, a history of blood clots, migraine, or hormone-sensitive cancer. Seek urgent medical help for sudden chest pain, breathlessness, painful leg swelling, severe headache, vision changes, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
