What is it used for?
Itraconazole is an antifungal medicine used to treat fungal infections, including infections of the skin, nails and other parts of the body, as prescribed by a doctor.
How does it work?
It stops fungi from making ergosterol, a substance they need to build and maintain their cell membranes. This helps stop the growth of the fungus.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the recommended treatment. Do not change the dose or stop treatment early without medical advice. Follow the instructions specific to the product form supplied.
Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhoea, headache and dizziness. Skin rash may also occur.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about liver disease, heart failure, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any allergy to antifungal medicines. Itraconazole can interact with many medicines, so provide a complete list of all medicines and supplements being used. Seek medical advice for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe tiredness, breathing difficulty or swelling of the legs.
