What is it used for?
Colistimethate injection is an antibiotic used in hospitals to treat serious bacterial infections caused by certain susceptible bacteria, including some infections that are resistant to other antibiotics.
How does it work?
It is converted in the body to colistin, which damages the outer membrane of certain bacteria and kills them.
How to take/use it
This injection is given by a doctor or nurse, usually into a vein. The dose is carefully selected according to the infection and kidney function. It should not be self-administered.
Common side effects
Tingling or numbness, dizziness, weakness, nausea, diarrhoea, and injection-site reactions may occur. Kidney problems and breathing or muscle weakness can occur, particularly with higher doses or prolonged treatment.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney disease, muscle or nerve disorders, or any previous allergy to colistimethate or colistin. Kidney function may need monitoring during treatment. Seek urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, severe weakness, facial swelling, or a severe rash.
