What is it used for?
Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some urinary, gastrointestinal, respiratory, skin and other infections. It does not work against viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making and repairing their DNA, which prevents them from growing and surviving.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the recommended course, even if symptoms improve. Swallow with water. Do not take it at the same time as antacids or supplements containing iron, calcium, magnesium or zinc; follow the timing advice from a doctor or pharmacist. Do not share leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pain, headache and dizziness.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about ciprofloxacin allergy, kidney problems, heart rhythm problems, seizures, tendon disorders, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Stop taking it and seek medical advice for tendon pain or swelling, numbness or tingling, severe mood or nerve symptoms, fainting or a fast/irregular heartbeat, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Check with a doctor or pharmacist before use if taking other medicines, especially tizanidine, warfarin or medicines affecting heart rhythm.
