What is it used for?
Ciprofloxacin is a prescription antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some urinary, gastrointestinal, respiratory, skin and other infections. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking enzymes they need to copy and repair their DNA.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the recommended course, even if symptoms improve. Swallow with plenty of water. Do not take it at the same time as antacids or supplements containing iron, calcium, magnesium or zinc; ask a pharmacist how to separate these products. Do not use leftover antibiotics or share them with others.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, headache and dizziness. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent diarrhoea.

Precautions
Stop taking it and seek medical help for tendon pain or swelling, numbness or tingling, severe mood or nerve-related symptoms, allergic reactions, or irregular heartbeat. Use with caution in people with a history of tendon problems, seizures, heart-rhythm problems, kidney disease or myasthenia gravis. Tell the prescriber about pregnancy, breastfeeding and all other medicines. Avoid unnecessary strenuous exercise during treatment and for some time afterwards because of tendon injury risk.
