What is it used for?
Artesunate injection is used for the emergency treatment of severe malaria, including malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. It is usually given in a hospital or healthcare setting and followed by a suitable oral antimalarial treatment when the patient can take medicines by mouth.
How does it work?
Artesunate is rapidly converted into an active substance that kills malaria parasites in the blood, helping to reduce the severity of the infection.
How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a trained healthcare professional. The supplied sodium bicarbonate and sodium chloride solutions are used to prepare the injection. The dose and treatment schedule must be decided by the treating doctor based on the severity of malaria and the patient’s condition.
Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, fever, chills, rash or itching, and injection-site reactions may occur. Delayed anaemia due to breakdown of red blood cells can occur after treatment.
Precautions
Severe malaria is a medical emergency and requires hospital care. Do not self-inject this medicine. Medical monitoring is needed during and after treatment, including monitoring for anaemia or other blood-related problems. Seek urgent medical attention for worsening weakness, pale skin, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, breathing difficulty, or signs of an allergic reaction.
