What is it used for?
Cefuroxime sodium injection is an antibiotic used to treat a range of serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin, abdomen, bones and joints. It may also be used to help prevent infection during certain surgeries. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by a doctor or nurse as an injection into a vein or muscle. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, kidney function and medical advice. It should not be self-administered.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, rash, and pain or inflammation at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about any allergy to cefuroxime, cephalosporin antibiotics, penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney disease. Seek medical attention for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe rash. Contact a doctor if severe or persistent diarrhoea develops during or after treatment. Use only as prescribed and complete the advised course.
