What is it used for?
Ceftizoxime is an injectable antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including certain infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin and soft tissues, blood, and reproductive organs. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Ceftizoxime is given as an injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. Complete the prescribed course unless the healthcare professional advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain or discomfort at the injection site, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, rash and headache may occur.

Precautions
Inform the healthcare professional about any allergy to cephalosporin or penicillin antibiotics, kidney problems, or a previous history of severe diarrhoea after antibiotic use. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe skin rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.
