What is it used for?
Cefpodoxime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ears, throat, sinuses, lungs, urinary tract and skin. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from forming their protective cell wall, which kills the bacteria and helps clear the infection.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share it with others or use leftover antibiotics. Follow the product label or prescriber’s instructions for whether it should be taken with food.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and headache. Skin rash may occur.
Precautions
Do not use if there has been a serious allergy to cefpodoxime, other cephalosporins or certain penicillin-type antibiotics. Tell the prescriber about kidney problems, allergies or previous antibiotic-related severe diarrhoea. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin reaction.
