What is it used for?
Cefpodoxime is a prescription antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the throat, sinuses, ears, lungs, urinary tract and skin. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from making the protective cell wall they need to survive.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor, at evenly spaced times if instructed. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share it or use leftover antibiotics.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion and headache. Mild rash may also occur.
Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to cefpodoxime, other cephalosporins or certain penicillin-type antibiotics, unless specifically advised by a doctor. Tell the doctor about kidney disease, previous antibiotic-related severe diarrhoea, or pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent watery or bloody diarrhoea.
