What is it used for?
Cefotaxime injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, such as infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, blood, bones and joints, and brain coverings. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of the infection, kidney function, age and other medical factors. Complete the prescribed course unless the doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea or vomiting; skin rash or itching; and changes in blood test results.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to cefotaxime, other cephalosporins or certain penicillin-type antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney or liver problems, previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea, or any history of severe drug allergy. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.
