What is it used for?
Cefotaxime is an injectable antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, such as infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, blood, and brain (meningitis), when prescribed by a healthcare professional.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming a protective cell wall. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How to take/use it
Cefotaxime 1000 mg is given as an injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose, injection method, and treatment duration depend on the infection and kidney function; use it only as prescribed and complete the recommended course.

Common side effects
Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; vomiting; and skin rash. Serious allergic reactions can occur rarely.

Precautions
Tell the healthcare professional about any allergy to cefotaxime, other cephalosporins, penicillins, or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney disease. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea, especially with blood or fever. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.
