What is it used for?
Cefotaxime is an injectable antibiotic used to treat serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria, such as infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin, abdomen, blood or brain. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills bacteria by preventing them from forming the protective cell wall they need to survive.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, age, kidney function and medical condition. Use it only as prescribed and complete the treatment as directed.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; vomiting; skin rash or itching.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to cefotaxime, cephalosporins or penicillin-type antibiotics, and about kidney or liver problems. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin rash. Contact the doctor if severe or persistent diarrhoea develops during or after treatment. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.
