What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the throat, ears, chest, urinary tract and other areas. It does not work against viral infections such as the common cold or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from making their protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. The tablet may be taken with or without food, and should be dispersed in water if required for the DT formulation. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share leftover antibiotics.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and vomiting. Skin rash may also occur.
Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporins or certain penicillin-type antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney problems, previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea or allergies. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulty or a severe skin rash.
