What is it used for?
Levocarnitine is used to prevent or treat low carnitine levels, including certain inherited metabolic conditions and carnitine deficiency associated with some kidney conditions or treatments. It should be used under medical advice.
How does it work?
Levocarnitine helps transport fatty acids into cells so they can be used to produce energy.
How to take/use it
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed. Measure the liquid with the supplied measuring device, and do not take more or for longer than advised. It may be taken with or after food if it causes stomach upset.
Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhoea and a fish-like body odour.
Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is kidney disease, a seizure disorder, diabetes, or use of warfarin. Seek medical advice if seizures worsen or if severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhoea occurs.
