What is it used for?
Nifedipine extended-release is mainly used to lower high blood pressure. It may also be prescribed to help prevent chest pain caused by angina.
How does it work?
It relaxes and widens blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily and reducing the workload on the heart.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole with water; do not crush, chew or break it. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.
Common side effects
Headache, flushing, dizziness, ankle or leg swelling, constipation, nausea and a fast or pounding heartbeat.
Precautions
Use only under medical supervision, especially if there is low blood pressure, heart disease or liver disease. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with nifedipine and should be avoided unless a doctor or pharmacist advises otherwise. Seek medical help for severe dizziness, fainting, worsening chest pain, breathing difficulty or swelling of the face or throat.
