What is it used for?
Enalapril is used mainly to treat high blood pressure. It may also be prescribed to help manage heart failure and reduce strain on the heart.

How does it work?
It is an ACE inhibitor that relaxes and widens blood vessels. This lowers blood pressure and makes it easier for the heart to pump blood.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day. It may be taken with or without food. Do not stop treatment suddenly without medical advice.

Common side effects
Dizziness, headache, weakness, nausea and a dry, persistent cough may occur. Dizziness may be more likely when starting treatment or changing position quickly.

Precautions
Do not use during pregnancy, especially after the first trimester; inform the doctor immediately if pregnancy occurs. Tell the doctor about kidney disease, low blood pressure, high potassium levels, dehydration or previous swelling of the face, lips or tongue. Seek urgent medical help for difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. Avoid potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes unless advised by a doctor.
