What is it used for?
Amoxicillin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ear, nose, throat, chest, urinary tract, skin and teeth. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from making their protective cell wall, which prevents the infection from growing and spreading.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food; taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset. Do not share leftover antibiotics with others.
Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort and skin rash.
Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to amoxicillin, penicillin or related antibiotics. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, or a severe blistering rash. Contact a doctor if diarrhoea is severe, persistent or bloody. Tell the doctor about kidney problems or previous antibiotic-related allergic reactions.
