What is it used for?
Ramipril is mainly used to treat high blood pressure. It may also be prescribed for heart failure or to reduce the risk of certain heart and blood-vessel problems.

How does it work?
Ramipril helps relax and widen blood vessels by reducing the action of a substance that causes them to tighten. This lowers blood pressure and makes it easier for the heart to pump.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and swallow it with water. Take it at the same time each day and do not stop it without medical advice. Regular blood pressure, kidney function and blood potassium checks may be needed.

Common side effects
Dry cough, dizziness, headache, tiredness, nausea and stomach upset may occur, especially when starting treatment or after a dose change.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is kidney disease, dehydration, low blood pressure, diabetes, or high potassium. Do not use during pregnancy; inform the doctor immediately if pregnancy occurs. Avoid potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes unless advised. Seek urgent medical help for swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing. Rise slowly if dizziness occurs.
