What is it used for?
Cefpodoxime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the throat, sinuses, ears, lungs, urinary tract and skin. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from forming their protective cell wall, which helps clear the infection.
How to take/use it
Take it by mouth exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Follow the recommended dose and treatment duration, and complete the full course even if symptoms improve. Do not use leftover antibiotics or share them with others.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and headache. Mild skin rash may also occur.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to cefpodoxime, penicillins or other cephalosporin antibiotics. Inform the doctor if there is kidney disease. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea, especially during or after treatment.
