What is it used for?
Ceftriaxone is an antibiotic used to treat a wide range of serious bacterial infections. It may also be prescribed for certain sexually transmitted bacterial infections, such as gonorrhoea, when appropriate.

How does it work?
It is a cephalosporin antibiotic that kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from building their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Ceftriaxone is given by injection into a muscle or vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection. Complete the prescribed treatment and do not use it for viral infections such as colds or flu.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; rash; and changes in liver or blood-test results.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to ceftriaxone, penicillin or other antibiotics, and about liver, kidney or gallbladder problems. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin rash. Use only under medical supervision, especially in newborns or when receiving calcium-containing intravenous medicines.
