What is it used for?
Ceftriaxone is an injectable antibiotic used to treat serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria, such as certain infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, blood, bones and joints. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Ceftriaxone 250 mg is given as an injection into a muscle or vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, age, kidney and liver function, and other factors. Use it only as prescribed and do not self-inject.

Common side effects
Pain, swelling or redness at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; rash; and changes in liver test results may occur.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about any previous allergy to ceftriaxone, penicillin or other cephalosporin antibiotics. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe rash. Contact a doctor if severe or persistent diarrhoea develops during or after treatment. Use during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or in newborn babies only under medical supervision. Do not use it for viral infections or without a prescription.
