What is it used for?
Ceftriaxone is an injectable antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, such as infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin, abdomen, blood, bones, joints or brain. It may also be used for certain sexually transmitted infections when prescribed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from building their protective cell wall. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How to take/use it
Ceftriaxone is given as an injection into a muscle or vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment length depend on the infection and should be followed exactly as prescribed. Complete the prescribed course unless the doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; skin rash; and changes in liver test results.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about allergies to ceftriaxone, other cephalosporins or penicillin-type antibiotics. Medical advice is important in people with liver or kidney problems, a history of severe antibiotic-associated diarrhoea, or gallbladder problems. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash or persistent watery or bloody diarrhoea. Ceftriaxone should not be mixed or given at the same time with calcium-containing intravenous solutions in newborns; the doctor should also know about any calcium infusion being received.
