What is it used for?
Ceftriaxone is an injectable antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, such as certain infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, blood, bones and joints, and meningitis. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming a protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Ceftriaxone is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or trained healthcare professional. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of the infection, age and kidney or liver function. Use it only as prescribed and complete the recommended course.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site, diarrhoea, nausea and skin rash may occur. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about any allergy to ceftriaxone, cephalosporins, penicillins or other antibiotics, and about liver, kidney or gallbladder problems. Use in newborn babies requires special medical guidance, especially if they have jaundice or may need calcium-containing intravenous treatment. Do not use without medical supervision.
