What is it used for?
Fluoxetine is an antidepressant used mainly to treat depression. It may also be prescribed for obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, bulimia nervosa and premenstrual dysphoric disorder, as directed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It increases the availability of serotonin, a chemical messenger in the brain that helps regulate mood and emotions.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food. Take it at the same time each day. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice, even if feeling better.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, headache, nervousness, restlessness, difficulty sleeping, tiredness, sweating and sexual problems may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about bipolar disorder, seizures, liver disease, bleeding problems or pregnancy. Do not use it with monoamine oxidase inhibitors or certain other medicines unless specifically advised. Seek urgent medical help for suicidal thoughts, severe agitation, unusual mood elevation, serotonin syndrome symptoms such as fever, confusion, muscle stiffness or tremors, or a serious allergic reaction.
