What is it used for?
Cefuroxime is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, including certain infections of the throat, sinuses, ears, chest, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and preferably after food, as this helps its absorption. Swallow the tablet whole with water and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, headache, skin rash and fungal infections such as oral or vaginal thrush may occur.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to cefuroxime, other cephalosporins or certain penicillin-type antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney problems, previous antibiotic-related severe diarrhoea, or allergies to antibiotics. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe skin reactions or persistent or bloody diarrhoea. Medicines that reduce stomach acid may affect cefuroxime absorption; check with a doctor or pharmacist before using them together.
