What is it used for?
This injection is used to treat serious bacterial infections, such as infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, blood, bones and joints, when prescribed by a doctor. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
Ceftriaxone kills bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall. Sulbactam helps ceftriaxone work against certain bacteria that can otherwise resist some antibiotics.
How to take/use it
This medicine is given by a doctor or nurse as an injection into a vein or muscle. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, age, and kidney or liver function. Do not self-inject or stop treatment early unless advised by the doctor.
Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; rash; and changes in blood test results may occur.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to ceftriaxone, penicillins, cephalosporins or other antibiotics, and about kidney, liver or gallbladder problems. Seek urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, facial swelling, a severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. This medicine should be used in newborns and during pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.
