What is it used for?
Ceftriaxone is an antibiotic used to treat a wide range of serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, blood, urinary tract, skin, abdomen and brain. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
This injection must be given by a doctor or trained healthcare professional into a muscle or vein. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of the infection. Complete the prescribed course unless the doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain, swelling or tenderness at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; and skin rash.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about any previous allergy to ceftriaxone, penicillin or other cephalosporin antibiotics. Seek medical help urgently for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe rash. Contact a doctor if severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea develops during or after treatment. Use only under medical supervision, especially in newborn babies or people with liver or kidney problems.
