What is it used for?
Ceftriaxone is an antibiotic injection used to treat a wide range of serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin, abdomen, blood, bones and joints. It may also be used for certain sexually transmitted bacterial infections when prescribed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How to take/use it
Ceftriaxone is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or trained healthcare professional. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and should be decided by the prescriber. Complete the prescribed course unless the doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; rash; and changes in blood test results.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any previous allergy to ceftriaxone, penicillin or other cephalosporin antibiotics, and about liver, kidney or gallbladder problems. Seek medical help for difficulty breathing, facial swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Do not use it for viral infections or without medical supervision.
