What is it used for?
Ceftriaxone injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, such as infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, blood, bones and joints, and meningitis. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills bacteria by preventing them from building their protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
This medicine is given by a doctor or nurse as an injection into a vein or muscle. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of the infection. Complete the prescribed course unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise.
Common side effects
Pain, swelling or redness at the injection site, diarrhoea, nausea, rash and changes in blood-test results may occur.
Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is an allergy to ceftriaxone, cephalosporin or penicillin antibiotics, or a history of severe antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
