What is it used for?
Betahistine is used to reduce vertigo (a spinning or dizzy sensation) associated with Ménière’s disease. It may also help relieve related symptoms such as ringing in the ears and hearing difficulty.
How does it work?
It acts on histamine receptors and helps improve blood flow and pressure regulation in the inner ear, which can reduce dizziness and other Ménière’s disease symptoms.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. It is usually taken by mouth, preferably with or after food to reduce stomach upset. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.
Common side effects
Nausea, indigestion, stomach discomfort, bloating, headache, or mild stomach pain.
Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is a history of stomach ulcer, asthma, or allergy to betahistine. It should not be used in people with pheochromocytoma unless specifically advised by a specialist. Seek medical help for swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulty, or a severe skin rash. Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
