What is it used for?
Betahistine is used to relieve vertigo (a spinning or dizzy sensation), especially vertigo associated with Ménière’s disease. It may also help reduce related symptoms such as ringing in the ears, hearing difficulty and nausea.
How does it work?
It acts on histamine receptors and may improve blood flow and pressure balance in the inner ear, helping reduce vertigo and related symptoms.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Swallow the tablet with water, preferably with or after food if it causes stomach upset. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.
Common side effects
Headache, nausea, indigestion, stomach discomfort or bloating.
Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is asthma, a history of stomach ulcers, or an allergy to betahistine. It should not be used in people with pheochromocytoma unless specifically advised by a doctor. Seek urgent medical help for swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulty or a severe skin reaction.
