What is it used for?
Aztreonam is an injectable antibiotic used to treat serious infections caused by susceptible Gram-negative bacteria. It may be used for infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin and soft tissues, reproductive organs, or bloodstream, as prescribed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming a protective cell wall. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How to take/use it
Aztreonam is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, kidney function, and medical advice. Complete the prescribed course unless the doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea or vomiting; rash; and headache.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any previous allergy to aztreonam, other beta-lactam antibiotics, or severe medicine allergies. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney problems. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea, including diarrhoea that occurs after treatment.
