What is it used for?
Aztreonam is an antibiotic used to treat certain serious bacterial infections, especially infections caused by susceptible Gram-negative bacteria. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall, which stops the infection from spreading.
How to take/use it
Aztreonam is usually given by injection by a healthcare professional. Use it only as prescribed, and complete the recommended treatment even if symptoms improve. Do not self-administer unless specifically trained to do so.
Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, rash and headache.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about any previous allergy to aztreonam, penicillin, cephalosporins or other antibiotics. Inform the doctor if there is kidney or liver disease. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea, as these may indicate a serious reaction.
