What is it used for?
Aztreonam injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious infections caused by certain Gram-negative bacteria, including some infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, blood and reproductive organs. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment length depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. Use it only as prescribed.
Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea or vomiting; rash; headache; and changes in liver tests.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about any previous allergy to aztreonam or other antibiotics, kidney or liver problems, or a history of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Do not use it for viral infections.
