What is it used for?
Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some infections of the chest, throat, skin, ears and genital tract. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making proteins needed for their growth and survival.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Do not skip doses or stop treatment early, even if symptoms improve. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover medicine. The dose and treatment duration depend on the infection and should be decided by a healthcare professional.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain, vomiting and headache.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about allergies to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics, liver disease, heart rhythm problems or low levels of potassium or magnesium. Inform the doctor about all other medicines being taken. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling, severe or persistent diarrhoea, yellowing of the skin or eyes, fainting, or a fast or irregular heartbeat.
