What is it used for?
Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some infections of the throat, ears, chest, skin and other parts of the body. It does not work for viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making proteins needed for their growth and reproduction.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed by a doctor. Follow the prescribed dose, timing and treatment duration, and complete the course unless advised otherwise. Do not share it with others or use leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and headache may occur. Mild side effects usually improve after treatment ends.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics. Tell the doctor about liver disease, heart rhythm problems, or a history of prolonged QT interval, and provide a list of all medicines being taken. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, yellowing of the skin or eyes, a fast or irregular heartbeat, severe rash, swelling or breathing difficulty.
