What is it used for?
Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some infections of the throat, ears, chest, skin and reproductive system. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow and multiply.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share it with others or use leftover antibiotics. Follow the product label or healthcare professional’s instructions for taking it with food.
Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain, vomiting and headache.
Precautions
Do not use if allergic to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics. Tell the healthcare professional about liver disease, an irregular heartbeat or a history of QT prolongation, and about all other medicines being taken. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, yellowing of the skin or eyes, a fast or irregular heartbeat, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.
