What is it used for?
Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some infections of the throat, ears, sinuses, chest, skin and reproductive system. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow and multiply.
How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed by a doctor. Follow the prescribed dose and treatment duration, and complete the course even if symptoms improve. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them without medical advice.
Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and headache may occur.
Precautions
Inform the doctor about allergy to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics, liver disease, heart rhythm problems or a history of prolonged QT interval. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, yellowing of the skin or eyes, fainting, fast or irregular heartbeat, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.
