What is it used for?
Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some infections of the chest, throat, ears, skin and sexually transmitted infections. It does not work for viral infections such as the common cold or flu.
How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow and multiply.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food unless otherwise directed. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them without medical advice.
Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pain and headache may occur.
Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics. Inform the doctor about liver disease, heart rhythm problems, a history of prolonged QT interval, or medicines being taken. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, yellowing of the skin or eyes, fainting, a fast or irregular heartbeat, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.
