What is it used for?
Amikacin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including certain infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, blood, bones and joints. It is usually used in hospitals or under close medical supervision when other antibiotics may not be suitable.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making essential proteins, which kills the bacteria and helps control the infection.

How to take/use it
Amikacin 500 mg is given as an injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The exact dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, body weight and kidney function. Do not self-administer it or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, pain at the injection site and headache may occur. Serious effects can include hearing or balance problems, ringing in the ears, reduced urine output and unusual weakness.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney problems, hearing or balance problems, dehydration, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any allergy to aminoglycoside antibiotics. Kidney function and sometimes hearing should be monitored during treatment. Inform the doctor about other medicines, especially those that can affect the kidneys or hearing. Seek medical help promptly for reduced urine, swelling, ringing in the ears, hearing loss, severe dizziness or breathing difficulty.
