What is it used for?
Amikacin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including certain infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, blood, bones and joints. It is usually used when other antibiotics may not be suitable. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from making proteins needed for their growth and survival.

How to take/use it
Amikacin 100 mg is usually given as an injection or infusion by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment length depend on the type and severity of infection, body weight and kidney function. Do not self-inject or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Pain or redness at the injection site, nausea and vomiting may occur. Serious effects can include reduced urine output, hearing changes, ringing in the ears, dizziness or problems with balance.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney disease, hearing or balance problems, dehydration, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Kidney function and, when needed, hearing should be monitored during treatment. Inform the doctor about other medicines, especially those that may affect the kidneys or hearing. Seek medical help promptly for hearing loss, severe dizziness, unusual weakness or reduced urination.
