What is it used for?
Atropine sulphate injection is used in hospitals and emergency care to increase a dangerously slow heart rate, reduce excessive saliva and airway secretions before some procedures, and help treat certain poisonings, such as organophosphate poisoning.
How does it work?
It blocks the action of a chemical messenger called acetylcholine on certain nerves. This can increase heart rate and reduce saliva, airway and other body secretions.
How to take/use it
This medicine is given by a doctor or nurse by injection. The dose and route depend on the condition being treated. It should not be self-administered.
Common side effects
Dry mouth, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, fast heartbeat, constipation, difficulty passing urine, flushing and dizziness.
Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is glaucoma, prostate or urinary difficulty, heart disease, bowel obstruction, fever, or thyroid problems. Seek urgent medical help for severe confusion, very fast or irregular heartbeat, difficulty passing urine, or vision problems.
