What is it used for?
Atorvastatin is used to lower high cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It also helps reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at increased cardiovascular risk.
How does it work?
It blocks an enzyme needed to make cholesterol in the liver. This lowers harmful LDL cholesterol and helps improve the balance of blood fats.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food. Take it regularly and do not stop it without medical advice. Continue any recommended diet and exercise measures.
Common side effects
Headache, nausea, diarrhoea, indigestion, and muscle aches may occur. Seek medical advice promptly for severe or unexplained muscle pain or weakness.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about liver disease, heavy alcohol use, thyroid problems, or a history of muscle problems. Discuss all medicines being taken, as some can interact with atorvastatin. It should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless specifically advised by a doctor. Liver tests may be recommended during treatment.
