What is it used for?
Atorvastatin is used to lower high cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It also helps reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at increased cardiovascular risk.

How does it work?
It reduces the liver’s production of cholesterol by blocking an enzyme involved in cholesterol formation. This lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides and may increase HDL (good) cholesterol.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food. Take it regularly and do not stop it without medical advice. Continue any recommended low-fat diet, exercise, and other lifestyle measures.

Common side effects
Headache, nausea, diarrhoea, indigestion, and muscle aches or joint pain may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about liver disease, heavy alcohol use, thyroid problems, or a history of muscle problems. Seek medical help for unexplained or severe muscle pain, weakness, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Inform the doctor about all other medicines because some can interact with atorvastatin. It should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless specifically advised by a doctor.
