What is it used for?
Artesunate injection is used for the emergency treatment of severe malaria, including malaria affecting the brain or other organs. It is given in a hospital or healthcare facility and is usually followed by a complete course of oral antimalarial treatment when the patient can take medicines by mouth.

How does it work?
Artesunate rapidly kills malaria parasites in the blood, helping to reduce the severity of the infection.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or trained healthcare professional. It must not be self-administered. The dose and treatment schedule depend on the severity of malaria and must be decided by the treating doctor.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, fever, and pain or reactions at the injection site may occur. Rarely, serious allergic reactions or delayed breakdown of red blood cells can occur.

Precautions
Severe malaria requires urgent hospital treatment. Tell the doctor about any previous reaction to artesunate or other antimalarial medicines. Medical monitoring is needed during and after treatment because delayed anaemia or breakdown of red blood cells may occur. Seek urgent medical attention for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe weakness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine.
