What is it used for?
Cefuroxime axetil is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the throat, sinuses, ears, lungs, urinary tract and skin. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and preferably after food, as this helps the body absorb it. Swallow the tablet whole with water and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, headache and skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to cefuroxime, cephalosporins or other beta-lactam antibiotics unless advised by a doctor. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin reaction. Contact a doctor if diarrhoea is severe, persistent or contains blood, as this may occur during or after antibiotic treatment. Tell the doctor about kidney problems and any medicines being taken, especially antacids or medicines that reduce stomach acid.
